ABOUT NEW BEGINNINGS
In the summer of 1990, H. Evan Smith was directed by the Lord to begin a ministry in Forestville, Maryland. As a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Pastor Smith had no idea the Lord would lead him to an unfamiliar frontier where he knew neither friend nor foe. The Lord gave him the name Agape Assembly for unconditional love. The name was further defined through the church motto: “Agape Assembly—the church where godly love is expressed and we are kingdom minded—touching the world.”

Before the church’s official opening, Pastor Smith conducted all-night prayer every Friday night. Agape Assembly was built on prayer, the word of God, and love. Pastor Smith’s first congregation consisted of his family. While he was preaching to his family in a townhouse in Forestville, the Lord began to send in laborers.

The Lord instructed Pastor Smith to conduct a street service during the opening weekend of Agape Assembly. The street service was held in a large parking lot at the corner of Walters Lane and Hilmar Drive. During this service two young men gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the name of Jesus. The opening service was held on Sunday, September 30, 1990 at Berkshire Elementary School. Many well-wishers and future members were in attendance.

The Lord blessed Pastor Smith with wisdom and knowledge beyond his 29 years. Pastor Smith began to incorporate ministerial and administrative skills to build the ministry. He learned a great deal during his service at Open Door Bible Way.

Within weeks, Pastor Smith had already established a Sunday School Department, an Usher Board, a Technical Staff, a Choir, and a Youth group.

Over the years, the Lord has increased the membership in quantity and quality. The church has grown from a membership of five to a membership of over one hundred.

In 2003, the Lord led Bishop Smith to change the name of the church to New Beginnings Ministry. New Beginnings Ministry consists of various ministries, boards, and programs such as---the Christian Education Ministry, Mighty Men of Valor, Women’s Council Association, Usher Board, Music Ministry, Deacon Board, and Young People’s Union.

Bishop Smith is also President and Founder of the New Beginnings Community Development Corporation which includes the following programs—Females of Destiny, Young Men of Standard, Report Card Review, and the Share Food program.
